A Third Quince
Liam Byrne (viol)
Victoria Cooper (voice)
Arngeir Haukssen (lute)

A Third Quince explores the richly poetic songs of John Dowland, Henry Lawes and their contemporaries, alongside the music of Shakespeare's plays and selections from the magnificent Jacobean masque repertoire.

A Third Quince is something in-between an early music ensemble and a folk band, with an occasional touch of the theatrical about them. The three musicians, Victoria Couper (voice), Liam Byrne (viol) and Arngeir Hauksson (lute) come from five different countries and at least as many musical backgrounds. Drawn together by a love of musical storytelling and a mutual admiration for the poetic fruit from which they get their name, the trio first met in 2011 working on Damon Albarn’s Dr Dee for the Manchester Festival and English National Opera. Their unique and evocative sound recently won them an invitation to be the acoustic models for the designers of the new Jacobean theatre at Shakespeare's Globe. A Third Quince’s repertoire stretches from Elizabethan lute song to Portuguese Fado to contemporary song and instrumental improvisations. Underpinning everything they do is a direct and vibrant expressivity, regardless of musical style or period.
