Badminton Estate gardens
Badminton Estate gardens and Worcester Lodge, Gloucestershire.
Monday 10 September.
Depart 1.15 pm Return 5.30 pm.
The Badminton Estate is one of the main examples of the French style in England. The initial designs were by William Kent incorporating a pattern of radiating avenues, which Canaletto painted in 1748. Thomas Wright added garden buildinghs between 1750 and 1770. We will have the rare opportunity of seeing the private garden designed by Russell Page and Francois Goffinet, which combines formality and structure with a wonderful sense of openness.
On arrival we will be greeted by the Duchess and given a short description of the garden and its famous buildings by architectural historian and author of the official guide to the estate, John Harris. We will then have time to explore the magnificient gardens before tea is served in the barn.
After tea we will be able to see the interior of Worcester Lodge.
