‘They were done on the Lid of my Box on my Knees as usual:' Constable's oil sketching Techniques
Constable's tiny oil sketch of Flatford Lock arrived at the Holburne ten years ago. To celebrate this long-term loan, conservator Sarah Cove will be discussing the artist's innovative sketching methods and virtuoso techniques. With his vivid depictions of the Suffolk countryside, Constable truly was the forerunner of the Impressionists. Sarah Cove is the leading international expert on Constable's painting materials and techniques and will use her magnificent and rarely-seen images to dispel some myths about the ‘Nation's Favourite Painter'.
