Nicolai Rimsky -Korsakov was one of the group of Russian composers known as “the Five” and the concert consists of works by him and composers associated with or influenced by him. He was keen on developing a nationalistic style of classical music which employed Russian folk song and lore along with exotic harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements in a practice known as musical orientalism. However when he became a professor of musical composition, harmony and orchestration at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1871 a post he maintained for 35 years he undertook a rigorous three-year programme of self-education and became a master of Western methods of compositional technique.
