CURATOR’S CHOICE: Willem Wissing’s Portrait of Laurence Hyde, First Earl of Rochester

Behind Laurence Hyde, Earl of Rochester’s famous name and sumptuous portrait lies a story of surprising connections and changing fortunes at the Stuart court. The artist, Willem Wissing, was part of an important group of artists from the Low Countries who created for the Stuart monarchs in England in the 17th century a portrait style with an enduring legacy. This talk will examine the lives of the artist and the sitter, both of which in their way were linked to the political and religious upheavals in England from the reign of Charles II to Queen Anne.
