Haydn and Mozarts Sonatas and the South German Piano
John Irving
Ticket £15 / £12 concs 01225 388569

The solo keyboard sonatas of Haydn and Mozart are among the treasures of the 'Age of Enlightenment'. Both composers' sonatas spread across the whole of their creative lives and in this lecture/recital, fortepianist and Mozart scholar John Irving introduces the richness of these works, explaining how their musical language is tailored to the soundworld of the South German pianos of the last quarter of the eighteenth century. His recital showcases the Holburne's Schantz fortepiano and includes Haydn's E flat Sonata, Hob.XVI:49 and Mozart's C major Sonata, K.330 alongside an improvised reconstruction of an incomplete Mozart Fantasia.

John Irving is an internationally recognized Mozart scholar. Formerly Director of The Institute of Musical Research at the School of Advanced Study, University of London (2009-11), John was also Professor of Music at the Universities of London and Bristol. He now pursues a dual career as an early keyboard performer and academic, and is Reader in Music at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance.
