In the company of Jane Austen

Fiata Trio present a Jane Austen themed program exploring composers who have a direct connection with or were contemporary to the novelist including music by William Shield, Johann Baptiste Cramer, Handel and Schubert.

Musicke in the Ayre

Din Ghani (lute)
Musicke in the Ayre return with a programme of music for voice and lute originally written for the Elizabethan and Stuart stage, and for early Italian opera. Lutenist Din Ghani accompanies soprano Paula Downes in songs by Thomas Morley, Thomas Robinson, Robert Johnson and Henry Purcell, and arias by two pioneers of opera: Jacopo Peri and Francesco Cavalli.

Professional clarinettist Claire King and renowned accompanist Gerry Hoddinott present a C20th programme from the French school including music by Saint-Seans, Messager and Milhaud.

Prokofiev and Beyond

Leading lights of the serious contemporary music scene, Simon and Sally present a programme of modern French influenced flute music including Prokofiev's Flute Sonata Op. 94 and an arrangement of Debussy's cello sonata for bass flute.

Songs by Rudi Stephan
Songs from A Shropshire Lad by George Butterworth
Three First World War song-writing talents: A E Housman's poems inspired George Butterworth, who died on the Somme. Ivor Gurney, who survived gassing and breakdowns, here writes for voice and piano quintet. Rudi Stephan died on the Eastern Front: his settings of various German poets are part of a small but rich portfolio of works now being rediscovered.

Helen Coombs (fortepiano)
Wiltshire based keyboardist Helen Coombs takes us on a spin through some of the ideas, elegance and inventiveness of the 18th century in miniature, in the company of CPE Bach, Haydn and Mozart. The variation was a favourite form in which to express rapid fire contrasting musical ideas and the fortepiano an ideal vehicle for them.

One of this country's foremost natural horn players, Gavin Edwards is accompanied by five incredibly talented musicians in an all-Mozart programme including Mozart's Horn Quintet.

Award-winning young graduate singers perform a selection of arias and songs from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In partnership with BSU Music Department.

Enticements and Delights
Leading young musicians perform an engaging programme of chamber music from the nineteenth century. In partnership with BSU Music Department.

Exoticism through French and Spanish Song
Lucy Simon (soprano)
A collection of beautiful art songs from France and Spain, some rarely heard, others very well known, which chart the exoticism movement of the late 19th Century, into the 20th century, and explore the cross-over of styles between both cultures. Music by Debussy, Duparc, Bizet, Granados, Rodrigo and Faure, amongst others.
