| Biographical notes | William Pulteney was the son of Colonel William Pulteney (d.1695), from a Leicestershire family of considerable means. He was educated at Westminster School and Christchurch, Oxford, and entered Parliament as a Whig in 1705. In 1714 he married Anna Marie Gumley, a noted society beauty. In 1727 he purchased the Manor of Bathwick outside the City of Bath across the Avon on its eastern outskirts. It is not known whether he foresaw the potential for the development of the Manor which was realised by his descendants. |
