Biographical notes Benjamin Barker was born in 1776 at Pontymoel near Pontypool.  Arrived in Bath with parents and brothers Thomas and Joseph in 1783.  Nine years the junior of Thomas, and always somewhat in the shadow.  Never travelled abroad and did not have the regimented artistic education of his brother i.e copying from old masters.  May have received some support from Charles Spackman, who supported Thomas so liberally.  3 brothers exhibited together throughout their careers.  Married Jane Hewlett.  Had many pupils in Bath.  Occupied Smallcombe Villa, (called 'Oakwood' from 1858).  His fortunes declined with the decline of Bath as a spa resort.  Sold Smallcombe villa in 1833 and moved to Devon with his daughter and son in law. Died in Totnes 1838.
