| Biographical notes | Medina was born in Brussels to a family of Spanish origin. After studying in Brussels he went to London in 1686, where he adopted a portrait style close to that of Sir Godfrey Kneller. In 1693-4 he settled in Edinburgh, where he became unrivalled as the leading painter of the nobility, and where he was knighted in 1707. |
