The History of the Holburne Collection
The Collection: Antiquities
Sir William Holburne had a small but significant collection of Greek and Roman antiquities. The Catalogue of the Holburne of Menstrie Art Museum, published in 1887 lists 59 antique intaglie and 33 antique bronze statuettes in the collection. A number of these, however, have subsequently been identified as later. Sir William probably acquired many of these pieces during his Grand Tour of 1824-5. In addition to ancient bronzes and gems, Sir William also acquired fragments of ancient glass, coins and a curious silver ewer said to be from Herculaneum (F35).
