Notes

This pencil drawing of Sir William Holburne was made during his travels in Italy in 1824.  In 1815 he had retired from the Navy, and five years later he inherited his father's title.  By 1824, aged thirty-one, he therefore had both the means and the leisure to take an eighteen-month tour of the continent.  This drawing gives an idea of William's appearance and character when he arrived in Milan in June 1824.

In his 1887 catalogue of the collection, Chaffers lists this drawing, no.1610, as 'Pencil drawing, a portrait of Sir T.W. Holburne, 15th June 1824'.
