| Description |
Hand-coloured aquatint, mounted, framed in light stained wood with perspex glazing. View of the front of the Sydney Hotel from the West. The view is framed by the houses of Sutton Street. Behind the hotel, rows of trees; beyond to the East, Bathwick and Claverton down with the Sham Castle. In the forground are groups of figures: servants gossiping on the corner of Sutton St and Sydney Place, a woman passing a package to a man in a cart, with a child looking on; a lady being led on a horse, folowed by two ladies in straw bonnets; a man carrying a sack, and two boys playing by the railings. |

| Notes | Plate 13 from Bath Illustrated by a Series of Views, J.C.Nattes, London, 1806. The Sydney Hotel, which forms a conclusion to Great Pulteney Street, was begun at the end of 1795-6, and Nattes's view shows the hotel not long after its completion. Rather than showing the hotel face-on from Great Pulteney Street, the view that faces the visitor arriving from the centre of Bath, Nattes has chosen the oblique viewpoint of Sutton Street. This allows the viewer a glimpse over the garden wall, and a sight of Ralph Allen's Sham Castle on Bathwick Hill. |

J. Hill after J. C. Nattes (1765-1822) Sydney Hotel: The Front Façade Coloured Aquatint, 1806 This view shows the Sidney Hotel soon after its completion by Charles Harcourt Masters. The original Hotel opened directly onto the pleasure gardens, and had rooms for coffee, card games and dancing. During the course of the nineteenth century the building went through a number of changes of use as well as structural alterations. In 1913-16 it was converted by the architect Sir Reginald Blomfield to become the present home of the Holburne Museum. The front of the hotel is seen here from Sutton Street, off Sydney Place to the West of the Hotel. This allows the viewer a glimpse over the garden wall, and a sight of Ralph Allen's Sham Castle on Bathwick Hill. The view of the Hotel is similar to the one that would have been enjoyed by Jane Austen when she lived at 4, Sydney Place between 1801 and 1805. 7-2007 J. Hill after J.C.Nattes (1765-1822) Sydney Hotel: The Front Façade Coloured Aquatint, 1805 This view from Bath Illustrated shows the Sydney Hotel, which now houses the Holburne Museum, soon after its completion by Charles Harcourt Masters in 1796. The original Hotel opened directly onto the pleasure gardens, and had rooms for coffee, card games and dancing. Close by was the Sydney Tap, a tavern for the use of sedan chairmen. The front of the hotel is seen here from Sutton Street, off Sydney Place to the West of the Hotel. The view is similar to the one that would have been enjoyed by Jane Austen when she lived at 4, Sydney Place. In 1913-16, Sir Reginald Blomfield carried out major structural alterations on the building to create the present Museum. A296 (Unknown) 29-6-2006 |
