Notes

William Holburne’s aunt, Catherine Cussans (1753-1834) may have influenced his interest in art, for she had a small collection  of antiquities, Meissen and Sèvres porcelain in her house in Hill Street, London. After her death in 1834 Holburne benefited from her legacies. This is Holburne's own copy of the sale catalogue of her effects. It is annotated by him with the prices of pieces purchased by him at the sale. He purchased five lots in all:

Lot 7. Three dozens of [Madeira] (£4 16s.)

Lot 21. Hoppner – A portrait of a lady, seated, in a landscape (£4 10s.)

Lot 53. A square tazza of giallo antico (£1 10s.)

Lot 54. A pair of storks, of bronze, on marble plinths, and two pairs of marble paper-weights (£1 3s.)

Lot 56. A sarcophagus of porphyry, and a tray of the same (£1 14s)
