Description

A part printed and part handwritten receipt from Custom House Quay, London for duty paid on goods imported into England by Sir William Holburne. Dated 20 August 1825.

Notes The 11 plain prints, 23 coloured prints, 2 maps, 3 bows and arrows  and beads listed in this receipt were almost certainly acquired by  Sir William Holburne during his Grand Tour of 1824-5. Sir William's passport shows that he reported at Ostend on 13 August 1825 in order to catch the boat back to England (L631). This receipt is dated seven days later. The bows and arrows were perhaps presents for his sisters -  archery was a highly fashionable pastime. The beads were probably also intended  as gifts for his sisters or mother; examples of their beadwork survive in the collection.
