Notes This was the first major exhibition of portrait miniatures. Sir William Holburne lent 95 miniatures and was one of the largest contributors. The 1867 and 1887 catalogues of the Collection list the miniatures in four cases - one black, one tortoiseshell, one gilt and one of ebony – that were 'exhibited at the South Kensington Museum, in June, 1865'.
