Description

Oval miniature on ivory in gilt metal frame.Half-length portrait, half-profile to right.  Yellow hair, blue eyes, prominent nose and chin.  General's uniform coat with badge and sash of the Order of the Garter.  Blue and brown stippled background.

Notes

Taken from a print by Schiavonetti of 1793, after a miniature by John Bogle.  An impression of Schiavonetti’s engraving after Bogle is in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG D10828).  Bogle’s original miniature is in the Royal Collection. 

Jagger has added the Garter Insignia which are not shown in Schiavonetti’s print.  He has draped the Ribbon over the right shoulder instead of the left.

Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827)

Watercolour on ivory.

The Duke was the second son of George III and Queen Charlotte and Commander in Chief of the British Army, 1798-1809, the famous "Grand Old Duke of York" of the nursery rhyme. He was a regular visitor to Bath.  Charles Jagger was the leading Bath miniaturist of his generation and executed the fine miniature of Sir William Holburne, c. 1827, in this exhibition.
