Painting and the third dimension

To coincide with the exhibition of 3D photographs of Picasso this talk will consider the different ways in which artists have responded to the problem of conveying the third dimension within their two dimensional works. From the Renaissance invention of one point perspective and seventeenth-century explorations of optics and perception to Picasso's own experiments with cubism and collage this talk will explore how artists of all periods have exploited the rules of perception to create the illusion of a three-dimensional world in two dimensions.
