Art and antiquities at home: enjoying souvenirs of the Grand Tour
Ticket £7 / £5
Dr Clare Hornsby will explore the ways in which art objects purchased in Italy by travellers on the Grand Tour, some of whom were tourists while others were serious collectors or connoisseurs, might have been used by their owners on their return to England. Some purchased souvenirs, others operated a strategic plan for acquisitions and there was much rivalry between the dealers in Rome for their patronage.
Dr Clare Hornsby is a contributor to the catalogue for the exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, The English Prize: The Capture of the Westmorland, an Episode of the Grand Tour.
