Friends’ Activities

The Friends’ calendar of social and cultural events presents opportunities to visit many places of historic, botanical or arts related interest which are not generally open to the public. On each of these tours there is a specialist guide on hand to lead the group.

AN EVENING FOR QUIZ LOVERS
Our popular annual Quiz evening will take place at the Museum on Tuesday 17 February 2015 at 6.30pm (doors open 6.15pm). Tickets cost £12.50 each for the quiz only, with a glass of prosecco or white wine during the quiz, or £25 to include a special two-course supper (not including wine) afterwards.

CELEBRATING FRANK BROWN
Our first musical evening commemorating Frank Brown, one of the Holburne’s most generous benefactors, was such a success that we are planning to turn this into an annual event.   Once again The Holburne Ensemble, formed by protégés of the late Christopher Hogwood, will play for us in the Picture Gallery.  This evening concert and party afterwards is scheduled for Thursday 30 April 2015.

THE HOLBURNE PLANT SALE
Our evergreen fundraiser at the Holburne Museum will be on Sunday 10 May. As usual this will be the day to stock up with top quality plants and gardening books, and then have a delicious tea with home made cakes.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT THE STOREROOMS
Look out for the next opportunity to buy tickets for our monthly raffle.  Tickets cost £5 each.  The lucky winner gets the chance to have a guided tour of the storeroom containing objects from the Holburne’s collection which are not currently on display.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES

HOLBURNE FRIENDS’ EVENTS – 2015

In response to requests from Friends to have a calendar of the various visits and events available at the beginning of the year, here is an outline for next year, so that they can be entered in diaries right away.

Spring:
24 March – BBC Bristol
5 May – Wells Cathedral

Summer:
23 June – Banwell Bone Caves. A 19th century tourist attraction, which very few people seem to know much about. Prehistoric animal bones, follies, and a wonderful view over the Bristol Channel.

4 or 11 August – Bradford-on-Avon Walk. A tour of this small market town with a knowledgeable local guide. Good exercise, up and down the hills !

Autumn:
22 September – Hayles & Howe, decorative plaster workshop. Ornamental cornices, ceiling roses, and elaborate mouldings – a chance to go behind the scenes to see how these are made.

27 October – St John’s Trust – talk and walk. An ancient charitable foundation which still takes care of the “deserving poor” of Bath. A tour of the buildings in the city centre, and a talk in the Chapel.

Please note that these are all “get yourself there” visits – but lifts are usually available from other members of the group. They will all take place during the afternoon, usually lasting for two hours. Groups are small, so put your name down as soon as possible to be sure of a place.
