May. 21, 2012 : Zoffany the final years

Monday 21 May, 6.30pm
Penelope Treadwell
Johan Zoffany (1733-1810): The Final Years
Ticket £7 / £5

Art historian, author and Zoffany’s biographer, Penelope Treadwell explores the final years of Zoffany’s career. He returned from India in 1789 a rich but physically emaciated shadow of his formerly robust self. His final years, although emotionally testing and marked by ill health, were artistically productive and full of incident. Forced to recognize that his place in the market had been overtaken by a generation of younger artists, he nevertheless managed to produce some of the most exciting and innovative paintings of his career.

(Zoffany: Artist and Adventurer was nominated for Historians of British Art Annual Book prize in the US)
