May. 22 - Sep. 01, 2013 : Ruby’s Room

Ruby’s Room
Photographic Miniatures by Bettina von Zwehl

22 May to 1 September 2013
Wirth Gallery FREE

We have commissioned renowned German photographer Bettina von Zwehl to make new work for the Holburne that responds to our collection of historic portrait miniatures. Bettina was particularly struck by an unusual early nineteenth-century miniature on display which shows a group of single eyes all belonging to the members of one family.

Bettina’s new work develops her recent experiments with photographic miniatures and the idea of the eye portrait. Using her husband and daughter Ruby as subjects she has also worked with designer Laura Lee to incorporate eye miniatures into jewellery.

Bettina has also photographed the eyes of a group of children from a London primary school which will be placed within the main galleries of the Museum. The children’s eyes challenge the historic and conventional subjects of portraiture as the sitters are unremarkable and anonymous.

Sponsored by the Arts Council

May. 22 - Sep. 29, 2013 : Rembrandt and his Contemporaries

Rembrandt and his Contemporaries: Paintings from the Royal Collection

Wednesday 22 May to Sunday 29 September 2013
Roper Gallery £8 with audio guide | Conc

This ravishing exhibition, featuring paintings generously lent by Her Majesty The Queen from the Royal Collection, explores the ways in which Dutch and Flemish artists of the seventeenth century revolutionised painting, looking at the world in new ways and developing new subjects and genres.

The show includes many masterpieces by the greatest artists of the period including Rubens, Rembrandt and Ruisdael. Highlights include Rembrandt’s famous image of an old woman, almost certainly his mother, Dutch landscapes and seascapes by Ruisdael, van der Heyden and Hobbema, a beautifully restrained still life by Willem C. Heda and characteristic genre scenes by Jan Steen and De Hooch among others including Dou’s jewel-like scene of a young girl chopping onions.

The Holburne has commissioned an audio guide to accompany the exhibition eliciting revealing responses to the works from experts in a variety of fields: A farmer examines Paulus Potter’s Bull; Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall considers the cooking of onions and the Bishop of Salisbury responds to Rembrandt’s luminous image of Christ appearing to Mary Magdalen

Lead sponsor: City Monument Property Group
Partner sponsor: Withy King

Jun. 19, 2013 : The Prince Regent’s Paintings

Wednesday 19 June, 7.30pm
The Prince Regent’s Paintings
Desmond Shawe-Taylor
Ticket £10/£8

The Prince Regent, later George IV, was one of the most extravagant and flamboyant of all Royal collectors. He purchased almost all the greatest Dutch and Flemish paintings in the Royal Collection (and in our current exhibition) and his tastes shaped collecting in England for a generation, influencing Sir William Holburne among many others. We are thrilled to welcome the brilliant Desmond Shawe-Taylor, surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures, to talk about this colourful Prince’s insatiable appetites.
