Karen Hearn - "Wrought with Flowers and Leaves": Embroidery Depicted in late-16th and early-17th Century British Portraits
Although comparatively few embroidered clothing fabrics survive from the 16th and early 17th centuries, renditions of such textiles often appear in British portraits - particularly those of elite women - of this period. This sumptuously illustrated talk will briefly consider the complexities of using such paintings as evidence, before examining in detail some specific portraits of this type.
