A repeat, full day trip to see two of Dorset’s finest medieval properties. We will have private access and an exclusive tour of the interior of Wolfeton and a private tour of Athelhampton.

We arrive first at Wolfeton House (pictured above), a Grade 1 listed medieval and Elizabethan house, whose original courtyard section dates back to 1480. Highlights include two magnificent early 16th century bastion towers, fine pictures and furniture from the 17th century, the Great Hall and perhaps the two most outstanding rooms in the Elizabethan wing.

In the afternoon we visit Athelhampton House, a magnificent medieval property. The most impressive feature of the house is its Great Hall, with its minstrels’ gallery, armorial glass, stunning ceiling of carved wooden beams and elaborate corbelling. In the gardens is one of Athelhampton’s most famous features, its unique topiary Great Court of giant yew hedges and pyramid- shaped yew trees.  There are also water features aplenty – fountains, lily ponds, lakes – as well as statuary, dovecotes, walled “hidden gardens” and a magnificent cedar tree.

The coach will leave the Museum promptly at 8.30am, returning at about 6.30pm. Please complete booking form 3 in the Friends Summer Newsletter. The trip is being organised by Mark Hake.
