Taking a lead from a poem by Rilke (who was Rodin’s assistant and mentee) this creative workshop will look, listen and experiment with ways in which sculpture can ‘speak to’ writers. We will be informed and stimulated by a fine exhibition but also leave a space for our quiet individual responses. Come and explore the freedom of working with fragments and notes as well as the ‘well-made poem’. Like Rilke with Rodin, and Rodin with Classical sculpture, we will see how we can be provoked and inspired by other people’s work.
Philip Gross has published twenty collections of poetry, including The Water Table which won the TS Eliot Prize 2009, and most recently A Bright Acoustic (2017). He is a keen collaborator with musicians, other writers and visual artists, e.g. A Fold In The River with Valerie Coffin Price (2015).
