Edward Bawden R.A., C.B.E. was one of the most significant graphic designers of the 20th Century. He was a watercolourist, printmaker, muralist, commercial artist, designer, illustrator and teacher. He trained at the Royal College of Art and went on to have a distinguished career as a war artist. Bawden’s commercial design work spanned over 60 years and this versatile artist remains the acknowledged master of the linocut. His work can be seen in collections at www.thehigginsbedford.org.uk and www.fryartgallery.org

Eric Ravilious was an English painter, designer, book illustrator and wood engraver who studied at the Royal College of Art under Paul Nash. His early work focused on the English countryside as well as urban scenes of London which epitomised the sense of Englishness that existed between the wars. Ravilious was appointed an official war artist in World War II but was killed in 1942 at the age of 39 on an air sea rescue mission off the coast of Iceland.  www.tate.org.uk
