Our involvement with this initiative continued to flourish and we visited the museums at Swindon, Bristol and Cheltenham. We met groups of their Friends and visited the collection. During 2015 and beyond, travelling exhibitions will be shown at each of the participating galleries.
One of our Spring highlights was the Friends’ visit to Prague, a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable trip. As they always cleverly contrive to do, Olivia and Simon Eliot managed to arrange privileged visits to places not usual accessible to the public.
May saw ‘An Evening with Dr Hayden!’ , the first celebration of Frank Brown’s legacy. Richard Frewer introduced The Holburne Ensemble, who played for our delight against the wonderful background of the Museum’s Picture Gallery. After the concert Friends had the opportunity to meet the musicians at a lively party in the Garden Cafe.
In June, the Eliots once again gave us a wonderful outing, this time a day trip to Eton College. We were shown round by Jenny Little, the Headmaster’s wife who generously devoted her time to us, giving us a memorable tour of Eton’s historic features inclcuding the Chapel, the Library, the Old Schoolroom plus the Art Gallery and Museum. Morning coffee and a delicious lunch were provided in the lovely Headmaster’s Garden.
In February A Closer Look visited Rooth’s picture framing workshop in Bradford on Avon. A group of Friends met owners Edward and Julia Rooth to be initiated into the arcane techniques of restoration, preservation and conservation.
Our annual Quiz Evening in March was well attended, raising £400 for the Museum. There were some really tough questions set by Quizmaster Simon Johnson, all based on a Georgian theme and competition was fierce between the tables. Friends later repaired to the Clore Room for a convivial supper. The 2015 Quiz will take place on Tuesday 17 February.
The Plant Sale was another big fundraising success, making an unprecedented £1180. Fingers crossed for fine weather in 2015!
