Discover Museums – Pathways to Volunteering is an annual 6 week course specifically designed to widen participation in volunteering, reaching out to people who want to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to become museum volunteers but feel they need some support.
Whether experiencing what it’s like to volunteer in a museum, getting out and building their confidence or developing ‘back to work’ and professional skills, each person will be supported by their own trained Museum Mentor.
Watch a film about the project.
It’s the first time I’ve ever done anything like this. It’s nice to be part of a team and to have access to people’s knowledge, it’s a fascinating museum” (Discover Museums participant)
Before I did the talk I was terrified…(but after) people came up to me and told me how powerful it was! The director mentioned that she was moved to tears by my poetry. I didn’t realise my poetry would affect people in that way” (Discover Museums participant)
In 2017 – 18 the project will be rolled out to include The American Museum in Britain and Bath Preservation Trust sites.
Now in it’s fourth year, this project (and the people involved) continue to inspire and amaze!
Our team of skilled Museum Mentors have worked with over 26 people, some of whom have gone on to volunteer in museums.
We have worked with REMPLOY and our local job centre to recruit participants.
‘Having a mentor made it more personal, you become a team, finding common ground and thinking together.
This course has really helped me during a dark period. It’s given me a focus, creating a space for me to think about positive things.’
